Proms in ZMG

When prom season rolls around, the excitement among senior students is tangible. Everything over the past four years has led to this night. In Zrinyi, prom is held at the local community halls at the end of November. We've only heard great experience from other students.

They say it's the most memorable milestone in highschool, and we were lucky enough to get in and watch the performances. The prom began with a play that was put together by the school's acting club, then it was followed by a ceremony called 'szalagtuzes', which means the classmasters and deputy classmasters put a ribbon over the students heart. It symbolizes the farewell from school, and some students wear it until they graduate. Then the show continued with all of the class's dances and waltzes. Class A performed a Barbie-themed dance, class B came up with a funny, prisoner-themed choreography. Class C's theme was also exciting, it was filled with Mamma Mia songs. We were a fan of class D's show called 'Never enough of us', which was based on the movie 'The greatest showman'. The songs that were used in the breathtaking waltzes are usually what classes choose every year.

This year, as always, the season before prom was extremely fast-paced and eventful for everyone. Those who were about to participate either in the waltz or in the class dance were exceedingly thrilled about the fabulous dresses, mesmerising makeup and the gorgeous hairstyles. The seniors had multiple dance classes, fittings and had to come up with fantastic ideas to make the performance outstanding. But not only the seniors dedicated a great deal of time to create a fascinating environment, but plenty of teachers, students and outsiders helped behind the scenes so that the show could go fluently and keep the audience entertained. After the prom, we asked a couple of seniors about their thoughts and feelings, and all of the answers were unanimous.

Here is one: "I had a great time that I will always remember of, especially because in the four years of going to the same class, for the first time, we all were in harmony. I enjoyed the unforgettable moments and the atmosphere of the preparation, the hustle and bustle and that we didn't have a single dull minute." As you can see, there is nothing like being able to celebrate all together as a senior class before everyone goes on their own way to start their new lives in the real world. The presence of thousands of different emotions at one place was phenomenal. We hope that these moments will be indelible and that looking back to this experience will always put a smile on their face.

An introspect on canteen meals in Zrínyi

It is widely believed that canteen food is not the most appetising of all. But that’s a stereotype, so on account of these beliefs we decided to take a closer look at Zrínyi’s school canteen.

Horrors in the cafeteria?

It is important to mention that canteen meals are not determined or made by the institute but rather they are purchased from a specialised company that does everything in it’s power to profit off of teenagers in need of daily nutrition. Therefore this is not necessarily a critique of the culinary abilities of the lunchladies.

Thoughts and prayers to those who enter

Unfortunately we ourselves are attendees of the school canteen with not so pleasant experiences. Those who frequent the canteen may be equipped with the knowledge of the variety of meals presented. It is varied indeed. Apart from ingredients sometimes being spoiled, one time a classmate (who is definitely not a writer) got nauseaous from a poorly made non-disclosed dish, and ended up throwing up in the toilet, interrupting a class. Besides that, it is not unusual that the rice serverd could also be used as adherent as can be seen on the pictures below.

Nutritions: plenty or barely enough?

For comparison, based on a study conducted by Richard Wahl (The University of Arizona), the average adolescent woman needs 2200 calories a day, whereas for men, that requirement could be as much as 3000 or even higher depending on activity level and measurements. The reasearch also suggests lunch should be 40% of your daily calorie intake. We have taken on the role of a health inspector to see if our canteen meets these expectations. Here are the results:

Sum up

In conclusion, while some dishes visually does not seem to fit human consumption, our canteen does live up to the standards. However, we believe it is benefitial to serve enough for the daily needs of students. If anything, we suggest having multiple plans to choose from, but at least two based on quantity.
